Govt to withdraw shares from BATB

The government is contemplating to withdraw its share from British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB) with a view to controlling the tobacco use in the country. Ministry sources said, the government may withdraw its share from BATB for considering the public health. Currently, the government is holding some 9.49 percent shares of BATB and the authorities concerned is planning to withdraw the share of the government from the multinational tobacco company.

ধূমপান ও ধোঁয়াবিহীন তামাক সেবনের ফলে হৃদরোগ, স্ট্রোক, ক্যানসার, ডায়াবেটিস, ফুসফুসের দীর্ঘমেয়াদি রোগ (সিওপিডি), হাঁপানি ও যক্ষ্মাসহ নানা রোগে ভুগছে মানুষ। এসব রোগের চিকিৎসা অত্যন্ত ব্যয়বহুল ও দীর্ঘমেয়াদী হওয়ায় অর্থনৈতিকভাবে নিঃস্ব হচ্ছেন রোগীরা। বিশ্বস্বাস্থ্য সংস্থার তথ্য অনুযায়ী, তামাকজনিত রোগের চিকিৎসায় বছরে ব্যয় হয় প্রায় ৫ হাজার কোটি টাকা। অথচ তামাকখাত থেকে বাংলাদেশ সরকার আয় করে মাত্র ২ হাজার ৪০০ কোটি টাকা।
