Celebrity glamour to promote bidi!

Jharna Bidi Factory has resorted to celebrity glamour to promote its products. The company is using glamorous pictures of celebrities in its posters to draw the attention of potential customers. The poor working class who are mostly illiterate constitute the majority of the bidi consumers. The 2017 GATS findings suggest that there has been a 22.5 percent rise in the number of people noticing advertisement and promotion of bidi between 2009 and 2017. Notably, the punishment for advertising tobacco and tobacco products, under the existing law, is a simple imprisonment or a monetary fine not exceeding Tk. 100,000 or both the penalties and if the offence is found again, the punishment will be doubled.
